Alarms
don't seem to go off until the next time I turn on my Pocket
PC |
|
There are certain circumstances that may cause Pocket PC alarms not to trigger. This affects the built-in alarms as well as pTravelAlarm.
The first circumstance is where a piece of software or hardware interferes with the normal power-on sequence of the device. An example of this would be an expansion card which causes a message such as "Unrecognized card" to appear in a dialog when the device is powered on.
The second circumstance is an unconfirmed flaw in certain Pocket PC devices where alarms are only set by the operating system at 3 second intervals. Setting an alarm in
pTravelAlarm, or tapping Snooze and then powering off the device may cause the alarm to not be set on these suspect devices.
The workaround for this second situation is to wait for a certain period of time after setting an alarm or tapping snooze, typically of around 10 seconds. This workaround only needs to be followed if you notice alarms not being triggered on your device.
To avoid these issues for situations that urgently require a reliable alarm, we recommend plugging the Pocket PC into its AC charger and leaving it on for the period up until the alarm is scheduled to sound.
If
you have a Windows
Mobile 2003 device
and are
experiencing
problems with
alarms, please see
the Wakeup Tweak

Wakeup
Tweak |
|

|
This utility allows
you to "tune" the wakeup parameters of your Pocket
PC, which can improve alarm stability
for pTravelAlarm. |
Wakeup Idle Timeout is the number of seconds that the system
will spend in the resuming state until going back to sleep, unless
it is brought to full power. If this value is too small, the unit may go back to
sleep before finishing it's startup processes.
The recommended value for the Wakeup
Idle Timeout both for when the unit is operating on battery power
and when it is connected to AC power is 60 seconds. The
default is 15 seconds.
The "Always wake up PPC to
full power mode" checkbox, when checked, will cause the
Pocket PC to move rapidly to full power state when it is powered on.
Please be warned that this may have an adverse
affect on your battery since some applications, once active, can
cause the Pocket PC to not go back to sleep once it is fully woken
up.
Run Clock Cleanup launches
the system cleanup application "clocknot.exe". This
application is part of the Windows Mobile 2003 operating system and
is typically executed by the system once per week on a scheduled
basis.
Run Calendar Cleanup launches
the system cleanup application "calnot.exe". This
application is part of the Windows Mobile 2003 operating system and
is typically executed by the system once per week on a scheduled
basis.
To Install:
- Download the
Wakeup Tweak
Installer
- Run the installer on your desktop
PC to install Wakeup Tweak on your Pocket PC

Where
does pTravelAlarm find sound files
(Pocket PC) |
|
pTravelAlarm
uses standard Windows Mobile
dialogs to locate sound
files. For this reason,
sound files are only found in
directories with (at most) a depth
of 1 in My Documents or Storage
Card.
So,
for example, pTravelAlarm will
find sound files in:
- \Storage
Card\MP3
- \My
Documents\Alarm Sounds
But
not in
- \Storage
Card\MP3\Album 1
- \My
Documents\Alarm Sounds\Extras
For
"sleep" sounds, however,
pTravelAlarm can find and use
directories (using the Folder
option in sleep) at any depth.
|
|
pTravelAlarm
doesn't see sound files on my storage card |
|
If there is a
file in the root of your storage card(s) named
"ignore_my_docs", the Pocket PC file control
(which we use) will look in all folders on the storage
card. If that file does not exist, it will only look in My
Documents on the storage card.
So. If you have this file,
any mp3s (for example) in any folder will show up in the
picker. If you don't have "ignore_my_docs", only
files in My Documents on the storage cards(s) will show
up.
Having the ignore_my_docs
file also means that things like Word will also look in
other folders on the storage card, so it can greatly
increase the amount of time that apps spend enumerating
files on open.
You can download a zipped
copy of an actual "ignore_my_docs" file
below. Unzip it and copy the contained file to the
root of any storage cards where you want programs like
pTravelAlarm to be able to list all files on the card.

pTravelAlarm
doesn't show its Stop/Snooze dialog in front of the
password screen |
|
Sadly, we've tried to
figure out a way to have pTravelAlarm pop up its dialog
in front of the password screen and have failed.
If you're reading this and know of a way to do it in a
way that doesn't wildly breach security, we'd love to
hear about it.

Does
pTravelAlarm support WMA or AAC files? |
|
No, pTravelAlarm only
supports MP3, OGG and WAV files.
|
|
How
do I stop pTravelAlarms sound files from showing up in the
Notes application? |
|
Because pTravelAlarms alarm
and sleep sound files are .WAV files, and because
they're installed in My Documents, they will show up in
the built-in Notes application.
If you rename the files
to .mp3 instead of .wav, pTravelAlarm will still be able
to see them (and play them), but Notes won't.
